hi.
im new to the biking scene. the reason im looking to join the bike scene and buy one is to limit the use of my truck. but im not really sure what kind of bike to get. i don't have much cash so im limited to one bike used and older which i do not have a problem with. with the ridding that i can see my self doing is commuting around town, dirt trails (not mtb trails), and 20 plus mile rides for fitness. so that leaves me with the question what kind of bike do i get. what ever kind of bike it is i will install a rear rack. im mainly interested in road bikes, fixed-geared, or hi-bread bikes. but which type?

thank you.

I'd get a classic steel touring bike.

be quite good ^ maybe abit more modern to be reliable, you want the bike to be comfitable, a fixed gear wount realy be good for comfort

maybe even go single speed, if your going offroad your gears wount like it, even more if you ride in the rain, its easier to maintain to, alot simpler, keeps you a bit more fit, less on the bike to think about, if your new to all of this you might not know how to keep your bike working smoothly, still gears would be fine

if you get a road ish style bike with clearence for tires about 28c or 32c wich will be more comfitable and can handle some offroad, nothing serius though you will need a mountain bike for that, just get the right size and dont cheep out at all if your using it often, cheep bike will just put you off, same with anything else

its a wal-mart special. when i got it was in terrible shape. both of the gear shifters were frozen, the front derailleur was seized, and im not even going to talk about the breaks. it also need a good lube job. i ripped of all the junk parts, tore apart the rear free wheel and converted it to a single speed. im ridding 48/18 gear ratio on 26" wheels.

like i said before i really do not know much about bikes. so it would be a great help if you guys give me some insight on the KHS bike.

maybe get a rear brake on that thing Eek but if you got some good brakes, slicker tires new grips and maybe new seat it wouldnt be toooo bad, be a decent beater

and from what ive read and seen KHS bikes seem to be reeeealy good, but they dont have them here so i dont know much, i take it your on about the khs fixed gears?

yea the wal mart special is really fun to ride especially on the local trails. its funny i hardly have to use the front brake. this is probably due to the poor quality of the front and rear cone bearings.

im really looking forward to checking out the khs bike. ridding that thing will be a dream compared to my single speed. if i do get it the khs depending on its condition i may convert it to fixed gear. but if every thing is good on it i will just leave it geared.

well i went a head and got it. old frame with old modern group set. plus it has 700c wheels. the only thing i need to do is have the LBS give it a tune up. it needs a lot of TLC.

on with the pics

tonight im going to work on the shifter levers, raise the seat, and rotate the drop bard down. i do have a concern with the shifter levers because they only shift on direction.

yea i can get on and off that thing. it sure is a supper clean bike. i would not mind converting this one to a fixed gear or single speed. i did test ride a few fixed gear bikes in the last month i really love the the solid feeling.

got yourself a snazzy lil thing there Smile

other things i recormend is a new slimmer seat, maybe new pedals, you realy need the right shoes for those pedals, then wider tires if your not always on smooth roads for comfort and grip

will make a lovely bike, good luck

solid fealing is one of the best things about them, thanks to that im not realy fussy about wobbly parts, but if your commuting daily a fixed gear will start to get pretty painfull, its alot of hard work on your body

thank you. im really stoked about it.

going fixed or single speed will only happen if i can not fix the shifter levers. the derailleur on the front cog is all the way out and the derailleur on the rear cogs is all the way in.

here pretty soon i will be getting some sambas. will those work with these pedals

thats wierd, maybe the cables are seized up or something?

Posted: Nov 29, 2010 at 14:56 Quote
it is weird. i was able to shift them into the positions that they are in.
