Just a practice hub from class i modded. I plan to eventually do it to my current bmx hub, and then after then, in a few months, cnc my own hub completely by myself.

It will have a similar cutout, but different shape. Female axle, with an internal aluminum axle, and aluminum collars. Its going to be a light weight gsport-esque hub, but for pegless use.

This hub here is simply a mtb hub i scrounged from my parts bin, i lathed off some of the tapers that were on it, and then milled out the 3 slots(equally spaced no less). I then high polished it to a near chrome state. During the winter i hope to lace it up for my fixed gear.

I think it looks pretty bitchin, and it saves some weight while not really affecting the strength(at least in a road bike application).

Enjoy!

Damn Andrew, thats awesome. I'm co-oping at a machine shop in town, I am sure I will have something made up as well.. now only if I could think of something sweet.

Too long I've been waiting to see this. And it was worth the weight (pun extremely intended). That's pretty sick man, haha I don't even know how you came up with that, yea I do actually.

that's so cool. I love seeing people taking design ideas into their own hands. Good quality work too.

Pretty cool, but will it be a problem for the bearings now that they are so exposed? Looks cool, but it seems that it could cause a lot of problems with maintenance and cleaning.

you could always get light weight plastic pieces(or evenb graphite)to prevent that...

O+

saran wrap would take care of that pretty nicely i bet

like tha fact your making it on your own, and like the design, but really dislike the holes being drilled into parts an such.

Milled, not drilled.

Its going on a road bike(fixed gear to be specific) i dont see dirt or water getting in any more then does already being an unsealed hub. If i was riding dirt/water/mud with it, i would obviously come up with a solution for that.

On the real deal, its going to have sealed bearings, so no worries about stuff getting into the bearings.

You'd be amazed at what a mess road grim can make of even sealed bearings. I certainly wouldn't want to ride that thing through a winter.

I realize that it WILL get dirty. Its not going to be ridden in winter i assure you.

This was more of a project hub to see how well it turned out before i did a real hub. The next hub will be sealed, like i said, which will prevent alot of griming problems.

Even then i may try and figure out an oring system to prevent stuff from getting in.

Don't get me wrong, it is sweet and I love seeing the homebrew stuff like this, but I'd highly suggest something more than just sealed bearings for this hub. I've toast sealed bearings pretty quickly by riding in crap conditions. Just FYI.

what about a bushing of sorts that isolates the bearings from the holes?

That would work. You'll still get a hell of a lot of crap in there, but it will help the bearings last longer. I would go with a rubber seal of the type you'd use for plumbing.

thats pretty cool, but holes in bike parts always make me think of grim reaper and other similar nonsense. this seems like a cool idea though if i only rode BMX when it was completey dry out i would probably want one. i think a 14mm one would be really cool.
