I've got a cool little project started for a customer where I'm taking his 29-inch rigid single speed bike and making it into a 1x4 geared bike. Just enough gears to get up and down the hill without spinning out either direction, but not enough gears to have any major future mechanical complications.
I'll keep this thread updated with photos as the parts come in and I begin mechanical work on the project.
The customer wants to keep it on the cheaper side. X.7 short cage 10-speed, X.7 trigger, PG-1050 11-36 cassette (to butcher), and PC-1051 chain. Just picked up an E.13 XCX-ST black guide for it, and needing to figure out what size chain ring to do up front so I can order a new one for his cranks from White Industries.
That's a tough one there. Go high end of gears and bigger front or vice versa? Low end would be smaller gearing (lighter weight) but then a 32 front. MMM I go think for a while.
