Riding on the North Shore, pedal up and downhill down. I'm effing lazy and coming from narrow stock wheels, so I'm seriously thinking that I'm going to hate pedaling bigger tires uphill. Going to buy a wheel truing stand and learn how to do this myself with the help of youtube. Debating on DT Swiss either EX471 with 2.3 tires or EX511 with 2.4 tires.

Skill level is Joey riding black diamond trails.

I like my 26mm ID wheels. Keeps my 2.3 tire perfectly round for cornering.

O+

Bigger tire = More grip

2.4 tires would suit you perfectly fine.

I'm also strugling to decide between 25 and 30.

I read on some other forums that 30 mm rim users are coming back to 25, because they feel less lateral support from the tire when mounted on 30 mm rims when compared to 25 mm ones

I've noticed more support on 30mm internal rims (3 1/2 years on 30mm Light Bicycle carbon) than on previous 24-25mm rims as the sidewalls are more upright. I'm also able to run a little bit less pressure without the tyres folding over, and I've definitely seen a reduction in pinch punctures around the bead.

These little benefits all add up positively for me.

ETA - running 2.3-2.5 tyres.

Have a XM481 up front and an EX471 rear. Perfect combo IMO

Me too, and running a 2.3 tire rear and a 2.4 up front. Basically the aim was to match the rims to the tires

Hmm looks like the XM are a slightly lighter weight version of the EX rims. Problem is they're listed as All Mountain; won't people on the trail stop me and say "Bro, do you even Enduro?!"

Seriously though it sounded like the pro's had gone back to 25mm ID last year, but with the new wider 2.4 tires that the likes of Maxxis has put out a lot of them are going back to 30mm.

I guess I just need to decide if I want to run 2.3 or 2.4 tires. I'm pretty lazy.

Last season I moved from 22-24mm rims with a 2.3 DHF front and HR2 2.2 rear to 30mm rims with DHF 2.5in front and Aggressor 2.3in rear. I certainly noticed a ton of extra grip on off-camber slabs and loose dirt, but I can't tell if that is due to the wider rim or the wider tires. Probably a bit of both. I don't race that often, so I don't take it super seriously.

I didn't notice the added weight until I added the double-down tires, which do add some heft. Whatever though, I don't flat and I'm not racing XC so it doesn't bother me.

I switched back to 25mm after running 30mm. I found I couldn't run lower pressure with them, rims were more exposed and I trashed them in a season. Went back to 25mm both DT EX471s and Spank 295s and both sets are heading into their 2nd year. The Spanks are beat up a bit but nothing that hurt them, the DT's are mint still.

I think 25mm is best all round, I had 27mm now have 25mm.

30! Support those sidewalls. Just look at tires carefully to pick ones that aren't super heavy.
