I rode with a guy in Kelowna once. He had basically all the first aid stuff you could possibly ever use on a trail in his bag. Except for a needle and thread. He was basically EMT trained but he said he did not great stitches and they'd end up just pulling his stitches out in the hospital anyways so instead he just brought duct tape. It's quicker safer and easier as a trail fix.

I dislocated my shoulder 15 days ago freeriding, hurts like a muther F$^& still. It was stuck under where it should be, almost in my chest.
Anybody ever get over this or does it require surgery? I haven't seen the doc yet, maybe I should go get some xrays.

Did you put in back in place yourself? I'm just wondering how you have managed to do that without seeing a doctor.

I'm speaking from experience here. I have dislocated my shoulder 3 times. The first time was 4 years ago. On the doctor's recommendation (whistler clinic) I kept it in a sling for 3 weeks, then started physio. I had no problems for 4 years, then in June of this year I dislocated it again. I was with friends and we got it back into place right away. I went to the hospital for x-rays. The doctor I saw said to keep it in a sling for a few days and I would be fine. Foolishly, I listened. Within a week I was riding again and back at work. 6 weeks later I dislocated it again. This time I was alone and with no cellphone. I tried to get it back in myself by pulling on trees, lifting rocks, etc. but no luck. I had to push my bike out down the trail one-handed and drive to a friends house. A couple of hours later at the hospital the doctors drugged me up and put it back in place. X-rays revealed an old fracture from one of the previous dislocations.

The doctor was talking like I would have to quit riding. After they sent me for a CT scan, things were looking better. The doctor told me to wear a sling for a couple of days and take a week off work. After 2 weeks I went to physio, and my physiotherapist told me I should have been wearing a sling for 6 weeks. So now I am off the bike (well I'm riding on the road but no trails) and working on strengthening it up. I am waiting to see a specialist to determine if I will need surgery. If I need surgery, I will need to take at least 2 months off work, and it will take another month after that to recover.

The moral of the story...get your ass into the doctors, then get a second opinion. You should definitely see a physiotherapist. Unlike doctors, that all they do is deal with injuries.
