quick tip for young drivers - put both your parents down as additional drivers. Because they are older and will in theory be using the car for 5% or 10% of the time insurance companies will give cheaper insurance.
Putting either parent as a main driver and yourself as the additional driver gets its a lot lower too.

Thats not getting your own insurance though - so you will not be able to build up any no claims bonus. I bought my 1st car at 25 (5yeras ago), it still cost me £850 a year to insure 3rd party. Now i'm 30 with 5years noclaims the same car would cost £200 to insure fully comp.
my brother did that thing where he got a parent to be the named driver and he the additional, even though the parent doesnt drive. it does mean that he doesnt get any no claims bonuses or anything, but he pays £800 for both of them, even though hes the only driver, it proved to be cheaper. now im old enough to drive, im being insured on that same car, meaning i will have to share with my brother, but hes at uni most of the time, so i will get it mostly, the insurance company is adding me onto the policy for an extra tenner! not bad getting insured for a tenner, ey?
Get your parents to insure it in their name, and add you as a named driver.
It works!

also illegal mate. You have got to have your own insurance and then you can be a named driver on another motor.
Its only dodgy if your parents insure the car in their name with you as a second driver and you use the car the most. I was a named driver on my parents policy before I got my own car so its def not illegal! AND a mate crashed his parents car with him as a named driver and guess what the insurance payed out! Some policies let you drive any other car 3rd party then you do need your own policy which may be what you mean.

Im insured as an additional driver on my dads work van, and Im getting my own no claims bonus too!
Thats with direct line.
And I got my no claims bonus insured too for £5 a month.
So that if i have an accident or some old woman crashed into me I dont throw away a years worth of no claims bonus.

now thats illegal!
Most insurance companies work out the insrance cost on how old you, your sex, are and what amount of milage you do. so if your 17, male and do over 10,000 mile a year (teh national average) its gonna be expensive. If you put you mum on as a named driver, they will reduce the cost as she will in theory be doing 10% of the mileage (1000 miles), its works out cheaper.

oh, my bad ;/ would it make a difference if he doesnt even do 1000 miles a year? and my mum uses it like once a month? ;/

If you mean he literally doesn't drive - as in doesnt even have a liscence then thats illegal!
But if you mean doesn't drive it - as in just doesn't use it often - then thats fine.

it will depend on the insurance company, but yes.
i do around 30-40,000 miles a year (25,000 work miles) so i'm insured through a company that doesnt take mileage into acount.

Don't know if its been mentioned before but adrian flux specialise in insuring VW's not sure what there like with new drivers though but you could try them.
And im with swift cover, i was with tesco and my premium more than halved when i switched so i think there probably quite cheap.
