Here’s my el-cheapo dive into the SS world. I picked this 2015 Cannondale Trail back in 2019, and have rose that more than my Bronson. Picked up a cheap front fork, replaced the cranks, brakes, handlebar, and rear hub. All in all about $500 into it, and it’s so much fun. Great to pass people on the uphills, makes you feel like a rockstar.
How does the SS work with the oval ring? Seems like it would allow too much slack.
No issues here. Read some tips on another site to clock it to the largest part (around 3-5pm) and set the tension there. I can't tell when pedaling, when moving the chain by hand you can tell there is a very slight change in tension.
I don't know if ya'll appreciate single-speeds of the longer travel variety, but figured I would try my luck. Feast your eyes on my single-speed Norco Aurum with modified Zee setup.
