seriously man I've bottomed my 7inch travel ride in whistler (ok i overshot something both times i did it) but i do use the travel efficiently and im glad I have it there. More travel than 7 would be excessive for me, 6-7 ideal, anyless i would be bottoming to much.
Age has VERY LITTLE to do with it.

Even though a handful of kiddies an use a full blown dh bike, I doubt that most of them will even bottom out a correctly sagged Fr bike.

I've just turned 15, I weigh 58kg (128lbs). I have a Demo 7 II with a 500lbs spring and I have absolutely no trouble bottoming it out. It is set up correctly too...
i use 100mm of travel i can easily bottem that shit, i can also only use about 1 inch of it if i need to, its how you land.

i got my norco shore 2 years ago and i wish i had chosen a smaller travel bike, way to overkill for most of the trails around here....dont choose a bike because you think more travel is better as its not. get something light and easy to pedal! my 0.02 centz

the best qeustion would be if you want to lug a big bike around or use a smaller bike that would be easy to pedal, mostly would depend on what most of your tracks are like.
like i said before
