I've bought and sold successfully on Pinkbike for years and it's more difficult than ever with the amount of scams one needs to weed through. That said, I'm not going to jump into Zoom meetings, Facetime calls, etc. just to prove I'm legitimate - just my two cents on the matter.
I'm not telling anyone to not request these forms of verification, or not to take part in them, but I'd like to think there are other ways to identify whether someone is a turd or not.
Why wouldn't you engage in video call with a seller or a buyer? It isn't hard and can make the difference between closing a sale or getting scammed? I have bought and sold hundreds of items and got scammed about a year and half ago doing business as usual. I recently bought a high dollar bike that "seemed too good to be true", was super paranoid, but using the facetime to verify seller and that he had the actual bike in his garage, great chat with the owner about the bike and build, about which lbs he would ship it from, I contacted them as well. sale was easy and bike was exactly what i expected it to be. this HAS to be the new norm when buying and selling because you can trust no one.
I am new to pinkbike but just tried to make my first purchase via an ad, and I had an exchange with the guy and I asked for a PayPal invoice, which he sent, but when I tried to pay it my bank declined. I went back to message him through pinkbike to tell him something is wrong on his end, and poof - he appears to be gone. What's strange is the message exchange we had this morning is also gone, and my inbox shows (0) messages. What in the??
Ahh - I see someone listed he was copying ads just a few messages above, his username is (was) xhmanito
How can I be more sure something isn't a scam in the future?

I purchased a seat over a week ago and its still "for sale". They were very good about communicating when purchasing. After purchase they have not communicated. They did once with the classic poor grammar broken english. RED FLAG!
