Is it a budget build?

If not get an eXotic carbon rigid fork from Carbon Cycles CC (if you want your bike to be lighter which I'm guessing you do?) I had one on my old Kinesis Maxlight XC2.

for commuting I'm sure they are more than fine, thick steel rigid fork, can't go wrong

still thinking if i should bother converting my mtb to single speed, that still needs work Frown

thinking of converting my old-ish cannondale hardtail to ride as a single speed.

Any thoughts on where a good start point is for gear choices? I ride mostly technical singletrack, up, down and around town too.

I think around 55 to 60 gear inches would be about right

so around 36:16 maybe

have you got a crankset or rear cog yet?

no rear cog, I have an FSA triple that I was thinking of using the middle 32 ring.

Posted: Jun 11, 2011 at 19:19 Quote
maybe better to use the big ring so you have more options for gear ratio's, what size is the big ring?

Posted: Jun 12, 2011 at 6:09 Quote
big ring is 44. was thinking to try out the 32 first and go from there?

If it was all put together I would go ride it in a couple gears and see what felt best on the trail, but it's laying around in boxes of parts. Just trying to find a good starting point so I don't waste $$$.

32 and 44? odd sizes

i think the smallest single speed cog you can get is 14t, so maybe try around 32:16,15,14

rest is up to you, your leg strength, skills and hills you ride

i find 32:16 a bit low, even 36:16 a bit low sometimes, until i get to a substantial hill, what what!

Posted: Jun 12, 2011 at 12:25 Quote
actually it is low for me to now i work out the gear inches

come to think of it i was using 36:16 for DH, i never climbed a proper hill haha
