I have a new 2011 Kona Shred, all parts are stock with the exception of pedals. I have around $200 in gift certificates to a local bike shop. They expire in 15 days and are not redeemable for cash. If any, which parts should i buy for DJ/DH/ a bit of all mountain (I don't want to make it a single speed)?
Here's a link to the bike: http://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=shred
New seat, new cranks, new fork (if you have extra cash)
200 bucks will NOT buy a decent crank set or any fork ever. a seat? do explain...
BMX cranks. And seat is ugly, probably a brick
Its a dirt jump seat. its good cause uf you land wrong you wont get raped by the seat. a bmx crank set would feel SO weird on a mtb and not as strong. and 200 wont buy a good set

lolol so many things wrong. BMX cranks are as strong. There are few BMX cranks for 200, cause some of the best are only 150. And you dont need that large of a seat. A cushy pivotal would look alot better

not true AT ALL. bmx cranks are strong for bmxers not mtbers. and im guessing this guy doesnt care how his bike LOOKS. as long as it does its job well. and for his certificate getting a new crank set that he doesnt need is just unnecessary. the cranks that come on the bike are very good.

Im not going to even fight this. BMX cranks are cheaper, look better, work better, and are as strong or stronger

my friend, you are on a FAT stack of crack
who ever cares about how a bike looks over how a bike preforms is just not intelligent. you can argue all you want about cranks. the discussion comes down to what he should buy with his certificate and the answer is not a crank set. what i always go by is " dont fix what aint broken" or " ride it till it breaks"... and that is exactly what he should do with cranks. What would be much better is to get something like tubes or tires or gloves for when he needs them later on. or maybe get some tools from the shop. but NOT a crank set.
This man runs BMX cranks (obviously). He drops roofs like they're curbs. The cranks he runs are $160. A seat would be a good investment. Pivotal seat and post, and cranks. Do that, and then upgrade the forks later. Don't listen to coffeycake96.

you do realize that the guy in video is riding a bmx... not an mtb... coffeycake96 is makin some serious sense to me. although i cant ride until it breaks (certificates expire on the 23) i could get tools and/or spare parts
Fuck, it doesn't matter what bike you ride, almost any bike can accept BMX cranks. Do what you want, you know nothing, and I'm sure others will agree.
yeah he is on a bmx riding bmx cranks most likely whats your point? are you suggesting that mtb cranks can not do this? explain to me why dh riders dont use bmx cranks? is this because they lack the strength against mtb cranks
