Hey Pinkbike, I have an Intense Socom, I am running a DHX5.0 with a 9.5x3.25 stroke spring. I want to replace the spring to go down in spring weight (the rear is a bit stiff). I have been looking at other spring options and I am having some trouble.
Would running a 9.5x3.0 stroke spring work just the same as my existing spring? I assume it would work fine, as long as the coil doesn't bind fully, before the shock bottoms. Also would that lower the amount of travel the bike has? I am comfortable with the stock 203mm of travel.
I really appreciate any feedback.

It would be a bit sketchy mate, I reckon the spring might bind. Unless the new spring isn't a Fox brand, because Fox add 0.25 or thereabouts to the length of their spring strokes.

also, the only thing thatd lower the overall travel would be getting a shorter shock on the bike.
cheers mate.

No that will not change the travel but trying to mess with the spring free length is really not advised. A lot goes into spring rate calculation/manufacturing than just the "rate" painted on the side of the spring. Spring rate has to do with wire diameter, coil diameter, the distance between coils (very important and the thing that usually gets screwed up when "downsizing or upsizing coil length), free length, and compressed length.

By changing the spring length your messing with a variety of factors and in the end you may just end up chasing your tail. In this case the engineer that designed the shock is correct and I would just stick to the spring length he calculated and find the correct one for the rate your looking for.

Thanks for the help, I also found this,http://www.sicklines.com/projects/project-intense-socom-fro/
they used a 3.0 spring with a spacer, interesting. It has been hard to find any shock springs that have a 3.25 length.

Look at the wire diameter and the space between the coils...that's probably why the spacer is possible because the compressed length of that spring is probably very small comparatively.

Also here's your springs

Fox call their stroke 3.25 but it is the same as other manufacturers 3.00. So buying a 9.5 x 3.00 spring is fine for it.

"Fox for some reason labels their springs slightly differently and states the second number as the maximum spring compression at shock bind which can confuse you" - http://www.sicklines.com/tech/shock_details/
