Fixed Gear Freestyle frame size advice?

So I am looking to get myself an entry level freestyle fixed gear, mainly because my knees are too bad for BMX/mtb now, and I also need a bike to commute with...seems like the natural choice!

My question: I am 6 feet tall with long legs. I am 175lbs and wide shouldered since I workout (not bragging, stating facts)

I normally ride a 58-59 cm frame as my road bike.

I DO, however, realize that for a trick bike, I'd want a shorter top tube and more compact geo, to do spin tricks etc.

I am just wondering, how far down should I size down? Would I be ok with a 56cm, or should I drop down to 54cm? I don't want to be uncomfortable on longer rides to downtown, etc (25km trips). However I DON'T want a bike that will suck for tricks and will discourage me!

I know that those tiny 52cm ones are way too small, but not sure if 56cm will be too big, or just right?

ANY advice would be amazing, I know there are a lot you guys out in Cali that ride this style, so help me out! Thanks!

Nevertheless I've invited some people to the thread.

56 to 54 probably sounds about right. It might come down to the sizes offered in a certain frames though. Most FGFS frames seam to come only in a small, medium, and large, maybe a 52, a 55, and a 58. In that case, 55 would be your choice.

I'm 6'3", ride a 62cm road bike, and for FGFS, probably a 56 would be good for me, although I might go smaller if I wanted to get more crazy.

It's a hard thing to size, because everyone wants a different ratio of trick-ability/riding efficiency, so test riding a bike is the best way to find out. But unfortunately, not many bike stores stock complete FGFS bikes, so unless you know someone who has one, you have to rely on your experiences with road and track style bikes as a jumping off point.

Sorry Kinetic! I should have known that....darn! Well too late now, but next time!

Harparo, thanks for the advice. Yea, I can see it being very difficult to size. Its a completely different style etc. Its like BMX frames. I normally ride a 21" BMX frame, but some frames I prefer a 20 or even a 21.5. It varies.

I was thinking 56 might be my best best, but 54 would be good too. The key idea is to remember I would commute with it too. All around everything bike Smile

Local shop has a Pk RIpper in stock.... the reason I ask is that I saw a place selling Pk Ripper's in the US for 399$ new (2010 model), BUT they only come in a few sizes. 54 and 56 are there though...so I may scoop one up Wink

maybe think about what size mtb you ride?

also look around at pictures of the frames you want in those sizes, see what looks like it will fit you better

I think it would be hard to judge a size form a picture though... UNless of course, the rider in the pic is 6 foot (and it clearly says so somewhere near the pic, like in a rider bio/profile lol)

I am thinking 56 would be good, as 54 might be tight... I will have to see Razz

These FSFG are costlier than i thought! I may have to put the project on hold (which sucks)

yeah i know the feeling very well at the moment

i think it comes down to where you want your saddle? will you put it up so you can pedal properly or slam it so you can tuck it up when you hop

Mid range! haha so I can ride decently comfy, but hop a bit too! (on the other hand, i would just go with a quick release. High for commutes, then if I see a spot I want to ride a bit, slam the post)
