Shouldn't come off then, even if it does, it's not A big deal, but then.... Don't let this scare you... Sometimes if it does come off the spokes can grab the chain and pull it, breaking your derailer in some cases, but this won't happen to a well maintained gear set up
Yes, I am a mechanic myself and what you do is remove your casette (need cassette tool and chain whip), then just slide the plastic ring out. Another way is to get long sheers and cut it out, a little simpler but have to be more careful not to cut a spoke. Personally I always advise clients to remove it because it ends up causing more damage than good, when it chips away the plastic can damage your chain and cassette, and as others have stated as long as your low limit is set correctly it is completely unnecessary.
like everyone has been stating up above, the plastic piece doesn´t do a thing if you´re derailleur is set up correctly
so if you set up you´re derailleur up as explained in the link below, you should be fine (high and low limit screws are explained pretty well there aswell)
Ok well ive just gone and run through the gears and noticed it wont go on the highest cog as shifter wont click up anymore and also noticed the bottom 3-4 gears are abit clunky when i change. Now i know i can adjust derailler for the clunky low gears but any idea why it wont change to the highest cog? its as if i have 9spd shifters but a 10 cog casette if you understand?

you can´t mix up 9 and 10 speed drivetrains mate... if you´re going to run 10 speed, you need a 10 speed shifter, derailleur, cassette and chain. Same if you want to run 9 speed.
10 speed cassettes have narrower spacing than 9 speed ones, so a 10 speed cassette requires a narrower chain to fit properly between the cogs. It also means that the derailleur moves less with every shift. so if you have a 9 speed system and have a 10 speed cassette or what ever, no wonder why it´s all messed up.
Everything is 10spd as it is a demo 8 II complete and I haven't changed anything. I noticed today that when on gear 1 my shifters will shift down again so I'm guessing my derailler has been set up wrong and it's going to have to go back to the shop to be sorted.
