I was wondering the same. I noticed the Leatt website does not really clarify WHY certain ones are good for mtn bikes and why others are good for MX bikes. They mention padding and nothing else.

Is it just an excuse to take our money twice?

I think the only difference is weight, and the MX ones don't give as much movement (Based on my friends one vs mine)

But I'm pretty sure you shouldn't use a MTB one for MX lol.

If they're built for crashing on a MX I'd say you'd be fine on a MTB.

I ride a Leatt GPX Club which is a moto brace because there was no such thing as a MTB brace a few years back. IMO they're exactly the same, I don't notice any difference between mine and the new ones. I find no restriction to movement and it's not heavy.
The thinner padding is the over difference but you just don't notice it unless you have it set up wrong so you're hitting your helmet on it.
