I don't see whats holding the crank in? How does it come out? I have that tool.

It's tight on the splines, you fit a tool with an outer bolt that screws into the crank then another bit inside that bolt is turned and it presses against the bottom bracket and essentially pulls the crank arm off

Thats a hollowtech II Crank (or other manufacturers equivalent). The axle and driveside crank are one piece, its just held in by the non driveside crank being attached on by pinch bolts.

It should just pull out, if its a little bit siezed, tap the other end of the axle sharply with a plastic/rubber mallet, or use a hammer and a piece of wood. It should pop out nicely.

It isn't pulling out, must need a tool?

is the spindle held in by one of the external bearing cups?

It shouldn't be. The cups are just to hold the bearings in, and the axle slides through and spins on them.

try undoing the non-driveside bearing cup, that might help free the spindle.

Hit it hard with a rubber mallet there is nothing holding it in other than built up grit and friction.

my tool is this http://www.evanscycles.com/product_image/image/070/8f5/fb0/27378/product_page/ice-toolz-hollowtech-ii-crank-adaptor-tool.jpg

can't loosen the bearing cup because the protuding bit of the spindle is in the way.

I have tried smacking it out with a bit of wood and hammer but the wood is getting imprinted with the spindle..... dunno what to do Blank Stare

Yes sir. Take a rubber mallet and give it some hard whacks making sure to brace the frame so it doesn't move taking energy away. Judging by that pic, its is pretty gummed up and may take a few blows to work free. Make sure you hit it squarely, any off axis blows wont help. The other option is to put a piece of wood of the end and hit the wood with a regular hammer, might give you some extra force.

One other option, if you have the tool, is to unscrew the bearing cups from the frame. It will back off over the axle.

I prefer the socket type-
