i just bought a 2006 kona stinky and it has the drop-off triples on it, i believe they are the stock fork so im guessing they are the 2006 model and was wandering if anyone has any info on adjusting compression and rebound. any info would be appreciated, i dont really want to start tinkering with them without knowing much about them

thanks in advance

No actual adjustments. The fork is equipped with orifice port damping rods. There is no threaded part to alter the size of these openings meaning no adjustment.

This does not mean there is nothing you can do. The flow of oil through an orifice is described by Bernoulli's equation. This uses a discharge coefficient dependent on the Reynolds number which is in turn dependent on the viscosity of the fluid.

You can thus vary the oil in the fork to tune it (thicker for slower shaft speeds and lighter for higher shaft speeds).
The problem I found with that particular fork though, is that the geometry is far more influential on the flow than is the narrow range of oil we have to choose from. The rebound and compression are also coupled. I recommend trying different fork oil once or twice and if that doesn't do it, move on. A shim based damper makes a world of difference.

theyre a pain in the ass to adjust and youll need an allen key around 18 inches long to adjust the internals. the external air valve does a pretty good job considering the basic nature of the fork so unless you have the tools or know a bike shop who does, then i reccomend that you set them up as best you can with whats easily tweakable.

keep an eye on the seals too. theyre not the best and the non drive side is prone to leaking, especially after a ride when the oil rises due the increase in heat. keep a short length of shoelace tied around the stanchion to soak up any oil that might trickle down to your brakes as it will ruin the pads.

mainly what i want to do is slow down the rebound a little bit, from what ive read just searching around online is that anything rebound related is in the right fork leg, so my question is do the air pressures in both legs need to be the same or can i alter the pressure in the right leg to change my rebound setting or do the air valves have nothing to do with the rebound?

no, they have nothing to do with the rebound, for that you need the big ass allen key

Did the 06's get the junior T esque adjustment? I have the 04 and 05's. If true, ignore earlier post about not having a threaded part to adjust!

I had a set of 06s and they didnt have any external damping adjustment.

No, but marzocchi did do this ridiculous internal hex key adjustment. I can't remember if the fork in question was one of them. I have the ~16" long adjuster in my garage still...

yes, I know. i said that at the beginning of this thread. the 06 Drop Off has the internal adjuster.

drop off triples have an internal adjustment system that basically stops you adjusting them as these are basic out of box ready to ride forks for people who are on a tight budget or don't have time to dial them in,..........just fork simplicity for any one to ride,...........the rebound can be altered by the amount of air you put in them (more air = faster rebound) and the hidden internal adjustment with a long as allen key.......p.s i ride some drop off triples now so i know what im on about Wink

if you need any further help just pm me i have all the measurements and info written down in my shed

Hi, sorry to bring up an old thread, can you tell me the size of this Allen key please, and which side the rebound adjust is on? Also which way is On & Off
Thank you

I cant remember, I got rid of the forks a while back and never took them apart. honestly, unless youre completely broke, just buy a new set of forks. the drop offs are a major pain in the arse for very little return. get some Jr Ts instead.

I was looking to do a service on my drop-off triples and i was wondering if there are any tips or things to look out for when doing them. Also does anyone know a supplier for parts for the forks such as new seals?
