You can use whatever you like. Duct tape might get worn pretty quickly as its not too thick. A lot of people wrap an old tube around the chain stay and hold it there with zip ties which works pretty well but if duct tape is all you have then by all means use it.

I use tape from either an ice hockey or inline hockey stick. Looks similar to duct tape but is Hell stronger. However maybe not everyone has access to ice hockey stick tape and it is also not cheap.
