evs r3 or evs r4

So my 9yr old has decided to dump the bmx and start riding downhill the the rest of the men in the family. He has a full face and chest protection picked out. But we are stumped at which race collar to get.

Ive seen the evs r3 for around £30 and the r4 for £75. Is the r3 just a soft collor or does it actualy have some rigidity to them?? Whats best bear in mind hes not sending it or hitting high speeds just trying his best to get from top to bottom in one piece.
