So I have a two part question, the first and most important part. My reverb compresses about half an inch when I sit on it in the extended mode. Is this because it needs to be a good bleed or a sign that it needs a rebuild?

Second, I tried to bleed it but did not do a great job because it seems that my avid syringes (which are new) were leaking pretty badly and may have let air in. Is it normal for them to leak when you push in the plunger or did I get a defective bleed kit?

Try the simpler things 1st
Check the pressure is at 250psi (from memory that's the correct pressure but it wont hurt to check)
I've found they lose air over time/use and this is often the cause of a sinking saddle.
If pressure is ok then do a bleed.
if all else fails consider the rebuild.
