Hello pinkbike, I purchased a used bike about a month and half ago. It has a Manitou Stance Blunt fork and the bike is an 05, so i'm assuming the fork is too. I took off the top caps today just to look it over. It all functions fine for me now, but I was a little puzzled as to why one side had no oil in it, or none that I could tell.
I know very little about suspension, and about this fork. I have been reading the service manual but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I think I want to put some lighter weight oil in the fork because it should make the fork a little more springy, right? I am just unsure whether it's supposed to go in both fork legs, or just the side without a spring. Also, what is supposed to lubricate the left fork seal if there is no oil in it?
Thanks, sorry if this has been asked or if this is really dumb. I'm new to working on bikes and I am clueless about suspension
You only got oil in the damper side leg wich would be the right one.
If I understand you rught you only removed the topcaps and looked down in the innerlegs?
The spring is only lubricated with grease so no oil in the left leg (spring leg) also since the stance model is a cheaper fork from Manitou you do only get grease to lubricate the stanchios. You could remove the lower legs from the inners and degrease them and the use special fork fluid to lubricate it instead wich improves performance although if the wipers seals if not made for oil they will leak a bit more, you could replace these with the evil genius 32mm seals wich are made for semi bath lubrication.
If your fork is a 2005 it should have black stanchios and in that case I would advice you not to use them as they have might break. In 2006 they replaced them with steel ones.

Yes the stanchions are black, and yes I did look down the stanchions after taking off the top caps.
They seem pretty darn sturdy!
I jumped about 25 feet distance wise and nothing broke so I think were good!
