I just picked up an Octane Void off CRC for $137 shipped

This will be my first dirt jump build so I'm looking for a little guidance. I have an X-fusion Velvet that I'm planning to use for the fork. It is 120mm, but can be lowered to 100mm. It is also QR, I know it's not ideal, but I already have it and I'm trying to put this bike together on a budget. Beyond that I'm clueless as to what the rest of the build will be.

I'm looking for suggestions on a wheelset under $300 and cranks under $150 total. I started researching BMX cranks and believe I need a 68mm euro bb for 19mm spindles, 3 - piece bmx crank arms/spindle, a spider, and a sprocket. Would it be cheaper to buy a mtb crank since they come already bundled with a BB, spider, and chainring?

Yea, that is all you need. I was running Stolen Mob cranks on a 2012 Void until recently.

The spindle that comes with those cranks is 5.75 inches but I've read that you should really have a 6 inch spindle if you're running BMX cranks on a mountain bike. That said, the cranks did feel pretty solid. The spindle did go past the pinch bolt on either side but was just under a centimetre short of being flush with the edge of the cranks.

The bottom bracket I was running only stuck out 3 or 4mm from the shell, so if you're running a thicker bottom bracket you might not have enough spindle for the cranks to pinch onto.

The cranks don't get amazing reviews, they are a bit on the heavy side and apparently came loose for some people. But like I said, they've been fine for me. You'd be better forking out for some Profile cranks, but they are quite a bit more expensive.

I also ran a 28t chainring and had to use quite a few spacers on the drive side to keep the chainring clear of the frame. This meant that I ran fewer spacers on the non drive side and that the crank only cleared the chain stay by a couple of millimetres, 5mm is apparently the recommended minimum clearance.

If you're not running rigid forks then I'd suggest just getting mountain bike (AM/DH) cranks. If you want to run BMX cranks I'd suggest getting some with a longer spindle and if possible running a smaller chainring, though having a smaller chainring might mess up the gear ratio as you'd need to find a smaller rear cog.

To be honest at that price point the raceface chester is nicer looking, and tbh it feels a little more rigid.

Dunbar Cycles.com has Holzfellers for 60 bucks. Only an AWESOME deal if youre in Canada, but even after shipping.... CRC sells the same thing for 200 canadian. Azonic wheels are good, but I'd spend the extra 50-100 and get Spank Spoons or tweets. better bearings, lighter hubs.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was looking at the Spanks, but I'm on a tight budget. The Velvet I had laying around is the QR version. The Azonic's are 20mm, but includes the adapter for 9mm qr and 15mm. At $335 shipped, I'd be saving quite a bit. I will look into the raceface cranks though.

Sounds like it's coming together nicely! I'm waiting on my Void frame to arrive ... cracked my old Cannonade Chase a couple weeks ago, so was looking for a quick replacement on a budget. Very excited to try a steel frame again. Haven't had one since my BMX days.

I ordered from CRC as well. Does it come with the headset?

It doesn't come with a headset. All parts are on their way, I'll post progress pics of the build as soon as more parts come in.

Finally put it together. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. All I need to do is lower the fork to 100mm and I'm all set. I can't wait to take it the the local jumps!
