Planning a coast to coast riding trip on PEI...

Hey Everyone

I'm a road cyclist from the Hamilton Ontario area, but I am planning a trip to PEI either later this summer, or for next summer.
I wanted to get info on riding coast to coast in PEI. Preferably from people who have first hand experience.
I was reading about the Confederation Trail, which kind of bike would you recommend for this trail? Is it smooth enough for a cyclocross/touring bike? Or would you recommend just riding a road bike and keep everything to the paved roads?

What I read about the confederation trail is that it is mostly flat. But i was reading that people had mountain bikes. I'd really like to just ride my cyclocross bike across as its not that heavy and I can go faster on it.

Any tips are appreciated.
