So, Ive been getting back into riding recently and I fancy a change to my trusty Boardman Pro 29er.
Although I love the way it rides, I had a quick go of a mates Specialised, and loves the smaller wheel size and rear shock... hence, let's go to the bike shop!!

After drooling over several Santa Cruz and Yeti options after a ride, Ive decided to be a bit more realistic.

These two have come out top on my shortlist, they're within the price range (sub £2k), I've sat on both and liked both riding positions (although preferred the Giants) and both look suitably componented up! There just isn't anywhere I can take them out for a demo unfortunately!

Another plus side for the Giant is that it comes with a dropper post, another thing I've been longing after.

Llandegla is my local trail, and that's where it'll be ridden the majority of the time. But obviously it will travel around with me too.

Anyone got any experience with these two bikes? Even own either bike? Any niggles or negatives I should be aware of? Or any major positives to either? Peoples opinions on the geometry of either bike? Components I should discard and replace on either?

Any and all opinions welcomed!

Thanks Smile

I do love my trance. There is nothing I can really complain about with it, I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever and is a great bike. I moved to it from a Hardtail as well and was a bit worried about how climbing would be, but I can now tell you that it honestly climbs like a hardtail, with a bit of extra traction on the rough climbs. As long as you are in the saddle, there is no suspension bob, when you stand up there is a little, but I have never felt like it took energy away from me. I also like the incredibly low stand over high, it has saved my nuts several times.

Can't comment on the Scott, but you won't go wrong with the giant.

Brilliant thankyou.... That's just what I was after.

Am I right in thinking there is no remote lockouts on the Giant? Only locally, on the fork/shock?
(Not a deal breaker, just for info)
What is the dropper post like? Responsive? Has it ever stuck at all?

Sorry for all the questions, just better to ask someone with first hand experience, rather than a guy in a shop telling me what I want to hear haha

There isn't a remote lockout correct. Remote lockout is total shit in my humble opinion, I had it on my old bike, never used it, and I also haven't ever felt the need to lockout my trance, no matter where the switch.

My Trance (2015) didn't come with a dropper, so I bought the 2016 dropper about 2 months ago, and have been very satisfied with it. It doesn't come up quite as quickly as I'd like, but after one ride I got used to it and it has been fine since. It wiggles a super tiny bit side-to-side, but this hasn't increased and isn't noticeable when sitting on it. Also once I noticed the dropper sagging under my weight, but this was only me overtightening the cable tensioner, no fault of the post. Overall it's a great dropper at a great price.

Sure, those guys just want to sell you stuff Big Grin

There is no remote lockout and you don't need it, just one more unnecessary cable and lever on bike :-)
Dropper 2016 is reliable and very good priced and it works just as good as more pricey options on market. In general, i think Trance will serve you well and will not drain your pockets as some other brands. For more info, visit Giant subforum.

Beautiful.... Cheers for the advice and info lads!

Think I've made up my mind, but I'll just wait and see if any Scott fans turn up haha

Be sure to try out the Trance in different sizes to get the right one!
