Just for everyones information the new Vivids comes in 3 different "tunes". The tunes are basically different shim stacks designed to work with different leverage ratios of bikes. For example a shock shimmed for an super high leverage ratio like a V-10 will not feel good on a bike with a super low leverage ratio like a Sunday. This is a great option, which should make the shock very versatile. I recently was reading a thread by Dave weagle (the inventor of the DW-link) who said the cane creek double barrels will not feel good on the Sunday becasue the shim stack is too stiff for his super low leverage ratio frames. The Dw-link requires very little to zero low-speed compression to keep from squatting in g-outs and corners, the shim stack on the CCDB will be too hard for most racers, and CCDB does not offer independent tuning as of yet. There is actually now a waring on the CCDB site somewhere advising owner of super low ratio frames that theri product might not be right for you. The CCDB is by all means a dream shock on most bikes, but once you start hitting the 2:1 ratio range it is a bit overdamped.
The eye ot eye, shaft travel and tune are engraved near the red rebound knob.
And according to SRAM...
If Leverage Ratio = Wheel Travel / Shock Travel
For flat rate Tune A: 2.0-2.4 Leverage Ratio Tune B: 2.4-2.85 Leverage Ratio Tune C: 2.85-3.3 Leverage Ratio
For falling rate deduct 0.1 from the range. For rising rate add 0.1 to the range.
In the 2008 spare parts list there is a part number for the different tunes - shims only and complete piston assy
That's great that they offer different tunes. But after doing a bit of searching, I don't see any options ANYWHERE to choose different tunes when ordering. As well I don't see these different tunes in any spare parts lists either. Now the only two places to get your Rock Shox products in Canada would be from Cycles Lambert or Norco, and I've looked through both catalogs and haven't found anything.
OKay so from the info I have managed to grab up, for the time being all aftermarket shocks will comes as "Tune B", you can order the different shim and piston assemblies in the 2008 spare parts catalogue, there should be 3 different shim and piston assemblies to choose from. Then you can individually tune the shock to your specific frame. OE shocks will be specifically tuned for the frame they are sold on, you can check what tune your shock is by the engraving near the red rebound nob.
Just picked up my vivid today, and it looks sweet! I see where it says the different tunes, and yes the stock tune is "B" The different bumpers is a really smart design. The only thing I'm bummed about is that my RCS Ti spring doesn't fit! The ID of the Spring is too small to fit properly on the spring preload ring. Nothing a little bit of grinding can't solve!
Just a quick photo of my vivid with the coil installed. It took about an hour to grind enough away on the inside of the coil for it to sit properly, but it was worth it!
Wicked, cant wait to hear how you like the performance. What bike is it going on? Seriously considering getting one myself so any feedback would be great.
