Sorry I searched and found a bunch of threads about upgrading 3x9 to 1x11 but not the 3x8.

I am new to biking, just started riding with the friend and picked up a cheap used 2013 29er hardrock. I like it, but my chain likes to come off from the outer sprocket on the front for no reason, and I don't really like the 3x8 gearing that much. I saw that 1x11 sram nx was very affordable and am thinking about getting that, however after reading all about it, I am not sure if it will work with my rear hub. Was wondering if someone here could please clear this up for me?
