I've been pretty commited to getting a 2018 Rocky Mountain Altitude. Either the A50 or A70.
I'd prefer to spend money on components rather than carbon.
And I think I want to stick to 27.5 wheels.
But then I stopped by the Trek dealer.
The new 2018 Remedy 8 will have the same travel, 150 and 160 in front.
But it will have an Eagle cassette, which sounds sweet.
The top aluminum Trek will go for $4400 Canadian, the same price as the RM A50.
Any thoughts?

Well, I just put a deposit on a 2018 Trek Remedy 8. Will get it by the end of next week. I demo'ed the 2017 version on Sunday. My only complaint was that the rear 150mm didn't feel like a whole lot of travel. I'm going from 2014 Norco Sight with 140mm in the back. I was expecting a more noticeable difference. But the sag was set at 20%. I'll increase that on the new bike.

One of the main selling points that may sound silly is actually the vertical rear shock. Just like the Norco Sight, it will allow me to keep using my Yakima bike rack with the horizontal 2 bars.

Besides that, I totally loved to super tight feeling drivetrain on the uphill. Better than my old bike for several reasons. Better design of the drivetrain and linkage perhaps, plus, it's just brand new.

Other complaint, but it's to be expected with all these new low BB geometries: more pedal strikes. I'll just have to be more careful with pedal placement.

With so many frame types out there (27.5 vs 29; tire width; carbon vs alloy), there aren't many combo options per frame. Too bad. I might have paid more for Guide RS or RSC brakes. They no longer make the Remedy 9 in Aluminum.

I'll let you know how it is after a few rides. Smile

wpautz I ride a Remedy 9 RSL and set the sag for the rear shock at 30% sag. I will be honest it took me a few rides to get the suspension on this bike dialed in to where it felt really good. The bike I have has a 160mm Lyric up front which I run at around 20%-25% sag which balances the bike out nicely. A good place to start is on Treks website they have a suspension setup calculator for their mountain bikes. I suggest starting their to get your initial settings then dialing it in for your terrain and the type of riding that you do. This is what I did and it helps to have a starting point to get things setup quicker.

Just got my Remedy 8 a few weeks ago, its been amazing, climbs as good as a 31LB bike can and oh man after coming off a old school geometry XC 29er this thing is a blast to ride!
Only a few issues: The Bontrager dropper is not great, its slow to come up in the cold and in the muck (the only rides I've been able to do so far) the post would stick an inch lower from top, I took it apart (super easy) and lubed it with Judy butter (thinner grease) and its been a champ so far. The shop I got the bike from did not know how to set up Eagle and after watching a few videos was able to adjust it properly myself and its been crisp and silent since.
I also had an issue with the rear end creaking a bit. I read a review on the Remedy that said the pivot hardware comes bone dry from the factory. Took the bike back in to the shop and they greased the the hardware and its been silent since.

I actually had this same exact question. I just demo'd an Altitude C70 and it was super fun all around. The only other bike I've demo'd in this category was the Santa Cruz Bronson, which wasn't as fun and capable as the Altitude IMO. Plus any option in the Altitude lineup has so much bang for your buck.

The Remedy 9.8 is super appealing to me because it has even more value at its price point with a Lyrik and GX Eagle. I'll be able to demo the Remedy in the near future. I wasn't even considering 27.5's but now I'm reconsidering since I wonder if they'll be more fun than 29ers long-term.

You don’t even have to go to the 9.8! Remedy 8 has eagle drive train and Lyrik. Aluminum frame on the 8 though. You can’t get this set up on any other bike at the price point of $3,300. Most other bikes you get one or the other and to get both you pay $600-$1,000 more! They did a bang up job on this Remedy! Moved the pressure up a litttle in the reactive in the rear and slow rebound just a little and run a little softer in the front but speed up rebound. It will give any $5k bike a run for its money. Climbing is easy on this thanks to the eagle drive train.

My must haves list for a new bike include:
- 150-160 travel
- front / rear boost spacing so I can run WT format tires
- super stiff fork (36 or lyrik)
- GX Eagle
- Good technical climber
- Descending chops that will help improve my confidence.

I had been ready to purchase the RM Altitude A70 (SRAM with GX Eagle) last week, but then I came across the spec of the Remedy 8 and I've got to say that I am blown away with the spec on that bike for the price.

For anyone who's ridden both, how do they compare? Does the Remedy stack up?

I’m looking at the Transition Patrol - it’s similarily spec’d but has a better rear shock and post. Wanted to consider the new Slayer but it’s $1000 more and specs are a step down. Now deciding between the Remedy and Patrol.

How reliable is the Thru shaft shock ? I'm really considering a Remedy to replace my Reign but these proprietary shocks bother me.

Just as an update, after going back and fouth on these 2 bikes for a while I walked into another local shop and ended up walking out with a brand new Pivot Mach6 carbon!!! sure it cost a little more (but to be honest it was less expensive than a similar build carbon Trek or RM) and I LOVE IT! it is lighter, and climbs like a beast, but still has all the descending chops I was looking for. I would think you could get the alloy version in the same price range and these bikes and if you have a dealer I suggest taking a look,.
