Power meter pedals help

Looking to purchase power meter pedals. But I am having trouble because I am a mountain biker and can not find any SPD style. I am also on a budget and it seems the cheepest route ($500 +/-) is road shoes with road power pedals. Any one try this on a mountain bike? Other options? I know there are crank arms, hubs and such but all will require new crankset or wheel change = more money Thanks
