Chain rubbing on cassette - help a novice

I never had much chance to investigate the issue, and it seemed to appear out of nowhere just gently touring around my house. It seems to be rubbing on just a few of the cogs, not the entire cassette. very noticeable, as if the chain isn't setting just right on those two specific cogs. Derailleur adjustment? Chain issue? Cassette? Anyone help this rookie out? I tried to reference youtube but started driving me crazy as people typically try to fill time with redundant and irrelevant chatter.

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice

If you’ve ever dropped the bike, and are struggling to get the indexing right throughout the cassette, it can be a sign that you’ve bent the derailleur hanger.

Also try moving the barrel adjuster on the cable at the shifter.
Determine if the chain is rubbing on the adjacent larger cog or one or the smaller one.
Anticlockwise ( looking from cable side) will move the deraileur inwards towards the wheel.
Try 1/8 of turn at a time.

There appears to be some scuffing on the derailleur that would indicate I may have got root.... I dunno. I don't recall any bad impacts or falls. I may have to interrogate my wife and kids. haha


A slight adjustment as you have advised should get me back rolling. Thanks for the insight

If it's a 2x drive train running it big/big or small/small (usually the big/big combo) might throw the chain line off just enough. I have this problem on my Norco Revolver. As soon as there is a 11 - 42/46 XT 10spd cassette I'm going 1x.

There is a 10-speed 11-42T cassette available, but it's in the Deore M6000 line. I highly doubt Shimano will produce any 10 speed cassettes in the XT line.

Time to change that Norco to 1x. tup

In my opinion you'd be better off with a sunrace mx3 cassette

"Massively heavy"? I'm not sure about that. I just weighed both cassettes. The M6000 is 430 grams and the Sunrace is 391 grams.

In addition, the M6000 only has two separate cogs - the 11T and 13T.

We must be talking about different cassettes.

Yeah, it'd be nice if Shimano made a XT 10-speed cassette, but their focus is still on 11-speed and the future 12-speed XT groupset.
