I've demoed about 15 different bikes, all different categories and components. The one thing I keep realizing though, is that I don't like the modulation Sram brakes offer. Most of the people I've talked to always prefer the modulation, but I like my brakes firm in the same spot every time. That's another thing I noticed, is that every time I use Sram brakes, even the high end ones (which do provide amazing braking power I'll add), I'm having to guess where they'll bite the rotor the perfect amount. Personally I love the feel of Shimano Brakes, although the lever feel of Hopes are incredible. They always seem to bite in the exact same spot.
Anyways, just what my take on the whole Sram vs Shimano situation is, if there even is one. I'd love to here if there's anyone else who likes less modulation. LOL
I have SRAM Guide RS and shimano disc brakes, personally prefer SRAM, but only for trail riding. I find shimano make less modulated brakes and that’s great for XC where a lot of the time you are gunning it to the last possible 10th. SRAM I feel you can get the best out of very split second situations. I think both take getting used to, shimano is just more intuitive, SRAM ‘once’ you get it, you get it.
I'm not a fan of a lot of lever movement. Seems like the SRAM brakes equate lever movement with modulation, where as the Shimano brakes allow you the modulate lever pressure.
I agree with you. I mostly hate the lever shape but in generall I don't like them. yes they have power but feel forced to use 2 or more finger all the time so don't get my bar fingers trapped behind them on hard braking and my braking fingers slip of the ends. I think people who moan about shimano modulation are just hamfisted and have no feel. you get what you put in, there not power assisted brakes. sram lovers need the brake to soften and be weak for them.
do love my hope e4s they are the best all round when they are working, but had some mastercyclinder problems, the calipers get sticky and obviously cost.
