I'm considering a change sometime this year and the Patrol is my main target. Currently riding a Nomad CC 3 XL, which replaced a '15 Transition Scout in large. This was the first year limeade Scout, and I believe that frame had some funky geo that they changed the second year. I didn't like how short the bike felt, even with a 50mm stem and the seat back all the way. I'm 6' with a 6' wingspan, so by Transitions chart I should've been at home on their large. The bottom bracket was way too low, pedaling felt very awkward and unnatural but was fine running down the mountain. I even tried reducing sag to 15-20%, still felt weird. I prefer longer bikes for sure, hence the XL Nomad (a bike I love). Has anyone ridden an SBG Patrol, OG Scout, or a Nomad 3 that can offer some nuggets? I'm 210 lbs on a good day on the scale, but I do pedal my Nomad around with a DHX2 coil and no lock out just fine (slowly, but I get there). I embrace the pain because the 160mm of travel is more important to me. Thanks and ride on
I have both these bikes. What do you want to know?
Excellent, thanks for offering some help! I have not ridden a patrol yet, neither v.1 or v.2. I’m curious to know how the reach and bb feel on the patrol as compared to either the v.1 scout L or a nomad 3 XL, particularly the SBG patrols. My Scout bb felt too low, Nomad is much better. Not sure what size you own, but compared to geo of most manufacturers of previous years (short frames reach-wise), do the new bikes feel longer?
I ride a M Nomad and a M SBG Patrol. Sitting and peddling, the reach/ETT feels basically the same cockpit-wise, but the Patrol is more comfortable and pedals better because of the upright seat tube angle. Going down the Patrol is way more roomy and stable. It’s better in just about every way, especially in corners and on steeps. It also jumps really well. The longer wheelbase, slacker head tube and offset of the fork is the real deal as far as stability and inspiring confidence.
I love the Nomad v3. I’ve ridden it for over 3 years and can’t bring myself to get rid of it, but the Patrol is a better bike in every regard. I’ve ridden the two back to back a lot, because I ride the nomad when it’s sloppy/muddy/wet. We’ve had a lot of rain this winter so I’ve been switching back and forth. Still really love the nomad and it makes me realize what a special bike it is given that is an older design. However there’s no denying the Patrol eats it’s lunch. It’s a pretty incredible bike.
Thank you for the insight! I also agree with you that the Nomad 3 is a legend. I usually sell a bike to get a new one, but I’m likely going to keep the Nomad this time around and start a quiver. The steeper seat tube angle of the Patrol will be a welcome change though. I’ll keep the Nomad and the coil suspension set up for park days
I came from a medium N3 (with DHX2) to a medium Sentinel. Not quite the same as what you're asking, but the geo between the Sentinel and Patrol is very similar (Patrol is a bit shorter).
I love the fit of the Sentinel. The ETT is slightly longer than the N3, so it's slightly more roomy seated. It's much roomier from the added reach while descending and feels considerably more balanced and stable. The steep seat angle is awesome, and I will never buy another bike without at least what the Sentinel has (I think around 77). Overall, I feel like the feel of the bike is extremely intuitive. It will try to run away from you though if you get too far back - it rewards a balanced position.
Neither bike pedals very well out of the saddle, and rely pretty heavily on the climb switch. I'd give a slight edge to the Sentinel. The N3 feels very eager to go through the first 40% or so of its travel, which matches it's regressive-progressive leverage curve.
The Sentinel is noticeably poppier off small features, but actually surprisingly plush as well. I don't find myself missing my coil over small bumps at all.
