Hello there Took the cassette off and pretty sure i haven't changed anything. Now it's all messed up. Hope hoops pro4 hub, 11 speed.
Freehub spins ok when off the bike (when i've loosen the outer thing) but tightens whenever i squeeze the wheel onto the bike. Tightens to the point that i can pedal the bike backwards.
I've taken the chain off to ensure it's not that, and i can confirm that by freewheeling the hub with my hands when on the bike - it's definitely the cassette / free hub alone that is tight.(the fact that the cassette freewheels fine when not tightened probably means the hub is ok and doesn't require rebuild etc). Also this is without the skewers so it's not that either....
I think the spacers are right. There's 3 in total. 1 to sit before the granny cog and the other 2 between the cogs. Anyone knows why this happens?
I've also loosened the cassette tightening ring to hand tightness in case that had to be loosened. Still no luck
Youve replaced a washer in the wrong place... I'd have to look at the hub to know exactly where. At whatever point that is,the cassette is taking up the slack and the preload is being compromised.
You'll find there should be a 1mm washer somewhere in there that should take the load when the hub is tightened into the frame...
Hi, thanks for your reply. I just tried again to make sure i was using the correct spacer and still the same. The image in this website is exactly the same. Same hub, same spacer before the first ring (and the other 2 spacers where they should be). It's an 11 speed xt m8000.
There’s a green labyrinth seal behind the free hub that, if not seated correctly, can cause similar symptoms. It’s unlikely that is the cause unless the freehub was pulled but I thought I’d throw that in there as it is easy to check..

Well...forget the cassette. Taken it apart again, and the end thing (the cone?) is pushing on the bearing in the hub! I still don't know what i've done but in a nutshell it's as simple as that. I'm going to search online for a blowup of the hub and see if i've put something the wrong way around.
Just out of interest, the cone can be pulled out with everything in place, is that normal? Have i put the wrong cone on? I know this is going to be an embarrassing one - so apologies in advance!
I've got the right spacers on...basically the driver side spacer is touching the bearing when you push it in. Should there be something in there to stop this contact?

Is there a spacer between the inner bearing and the freehub, there should be (2mm)
No, well that would make sense. Ill go to shop tomorrow and get one...hopefully that will sort it. Will post success or failure tomorrow. thanks a lot!
Btw, sorry i see you posted that previously. Last post i thought you meant between the end cap and the bearing. OK got you now...and can confirm that's not there. So ill give that a go on the morrow. Thx.

Hope website has an exploded drawing of the hub with part numbers.
Actually the 1mm (not 2mm) spacer is there (is this what you're on about, part 5?), the only thing that seems to be missing is the o ring part 23 but i doubt that has any effect on spacer'age to the bearing.
For something blatant, it's annoyingly elusive. Time for bike shop me thinks. Can't make sense of it....and bored of it now too!

Yep part No 5 it is. Something in causing it though, I've seen those spacers get chewed up and cause binding, but if it's there and correct, then ?? Without being there I'm kind of stumped too.
Bit embarrassed but as Steve suggested - it did end up being the green seal, sorry about that. I checked previously…it looked like it was seated fine. Only when i lost hope did i start poking at things properly and low and behold it bedded itself a lot more than i thought it ‘did’. Made all the difference and i wasn’t expecting that.
Anyway, cheers and sorry for the open ended discussion. Definitely learned a lot more about my back end! Really appreciate your help and advice, got there in the end….have a good one…!
