Both come with similar entry level components. If you ask me, i would choose the Marlin 5 since it is a 29er which is way better for XC.

29 wheels roll much better vs 27.5 wheels, means you don't have to pedal as hard in most cases. Bigger wheels will roll over bumps, ect easier too. I would grab the 29'r...Most off the components, except for the fork, frame and bars are all maintenance parts, and can be upgraded as they wear out.

Buy from your LBS first off. Evans are owned by one of the most shady dudes in business atm.

As others have said, the Marlin will ride easier on the roads for your commuting as it's got the larger wheels, but the tread pattern on it is a lot thinner so less rolling resistance. As for the other components, outside of house brand bar, stem and saddle, they're pretty much identical.

I'd suggest the Marlin over the Pitch.

But evans is a local bike to me :L? and they have different derailleurs and gearing systems drive chains cranks all that jazz no ? and is thinner tread pattern a bad thing?

Neither bike is good value. Go Outdoors sell better bikes and better value, so does Halfords.

The Pitch has marginally better equipment, but you're realistically not going to be able to tell the difference.

And by something local, I meant an independent trader. Run by someone who cares about the industry, not Mike Ashley.

I hope you are not taking the Mick, because then your ignorance would be showing.
