I always liked reliable brakes that were cheap and easily fixed. I ran an avid bb7 road calliper with an odyssey mid lever and odyssey linear cable. Difference between mtb and road callipers is the pull ratio (mtb is long pull and road/bmx brakes are short pull) which needs to be matched.
I also ran v brake or bmx u brake if I could due to the fact that the callipers are tucked out of the way and don't really get smashed up. I did a lot of pedal grinds on the left side of the bike..
