I've been looking at getting the Trek Fuel EX 8 mountain bike, but was unable to sit on an XL or XXL to determine which was the better size for me (shops had the large which was too small for me). Since SARS-CoV2 has shut down everything, I will have to order the bike and wanted some opinions.
I am 6' 3.75" (I used to be 6' 4," but life has worn me down) and 205 lbs. Inseam is 36.25.
Based on Trek's website, I should be at the upper end of the XL sizing (6' 1.2" - 6' 5.2"; Inseam 34.3" -36.2"), and a bit under the XXL sizing (6' 4.8" - 6' 7.9"; Inseam 36.2" - 37.4"); however I have read in a few places that the bike tends to run on the smaller side. Outdoor Gear Lab states their 6' riders were on a XL. https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/biking/trail-mountain-bike/trek-fuel-ex-8-2020
Ordinarily, I would order the XL and move on, but the reviews make me question if I shouldn't move up. Does anyone have experience with the Fuel EX line and have opinions on which way I should go? Thanks in advance.
I’m 6’6 with 37” inseam and rode a 2018 Fuel EX8 in XXL for 2 seasons. I thought the bike felt rather large and I was very comfortable. I’m in the market for a new bike and keep coming back to the fuel. I like the changes they made to the Geo this year and am pretty confident i’ll be ordering one soon.
I was surprised to read that the Gear Lab test riders found the bike to be small. Trek increased the reach on the 2020 model but also made the seat tube steeper by a degree. I haven't sat on one yet but based on your dimensions and the updated geo I think you will be good on the XL.
Curious what you bought and your review. I’m currently in the same situation. 6’4” with a 36 inch inseam. Rode an XL that felt good after switching out the stem from 50mm to 60mm for a short test ride. However, like you, read threads about the XXl and now wondering.
