Hi guys.
With this Covid stuff happening and having people around trails while you’re zipping by can lead to them scrutinizing you
It’s having me second guess whether I should even go out and about
I just want to get your thoughts opinions on this on what you all are doing

It's not an airborne virus. As long as you're not coughing and sneezing around people, you shouldn't need a mask. The masks are a product of fear mongering and misinformation. Ignore any bigot who calls you out for not wearing a mask while biking past them.

After writing this message , i decided to go out and have that "f*ck IT" attitude, as to my surprise, the parks and trails were crowded and not a single person was wearing a mask. WTF!!
Even the kids...
And let me tell ya, there were many ppl passing closely to each other.. Still scares me, but you're going by so fast, nothing can touch you. lol

Wearing a mask outside is......well....useless. And depending on the type of mask (ie home made), most likely useless everywhere.

Infection is a result of the 'dose' of viral particles you take in, so it's not a situation where you breathe in one viral particle and you are infected - there is a threshold you need to pass where you have taken in 'enough' (whatever that amount is for you) to become infected, and that's all a function of exposure + time. So if you crawled into a cardboard box with an infected person and stayed in there for an hour, the number of viral particles you have inhaled will be quite high, and your chances of infection high as well as you inhale more and more of those particles over time (this is what they call the 'viral load' - twss).

So if you either reduce the time you are in the box, or increase the size of the box, the number of viral particles you are exposed to will decrease, and the total viral load will decrease until you go beneath the threshold where you will become infected.

'Outside' is a very, very large box.

Passing someone on a trail is a very, very short time window.

This is not how you will get sick. Go ride.

The New England Journal of Medicine published info as follows"

"We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid 19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflective reaction to anxiety over the pandemic."

Now that you're read what they wrote, read it again and again. Do you see several significant things that are said? There are at least 4 significant items noted................

That article is widely cited as evidence that masks are useless... but that is not the case, and It's important to read the follow up from the authors of that statement:

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2020836

That has no impact on this specific example - riding bikes on trails, where, as noted, you aren't going to catch it, but:

"We therefore strongly support the calls of public health agencies for all people to wear masks when circumstances compel them to be within 6 ft of others for sustained periods."

Your last quote is what my quote says. The practical application of both quotes is that if you are to have significant close contact with a symptomatic patient then wear a mask. Being outside riding your bike doesn't constitute such a situation.

PS, if masks work then we don't need any more lockdowns ever right?

1. Exactly.

2. I guess you'd have to get people to wear them to find out. CDC seems to think so. *shrug*
