I got a mongoose beast with a "pedal break" off FB marketplace to add a 66cc motor on to and while putting on the new sprocket for the motor chain, opposite existing one, I think I messed up the axel or somthing. After putting the wheel back on it seems to catch and slip pretty bad. I was instructed to remove the "break arm?" to convert it to a hand break system (no breaks at this point and it almost pedals like a fixed gear) but the axel dosent really spin freely and the existing sprocket seems to slip and catch and lose the chain at points. What I think happened is when taking that break arm thing off I loosened the whole assembly and possibly over tightened getting it back. I tried loosening everything and re tightening but had too much slack. Did I crush the bearings? The one side I looked at seemed fine but I have no clue about bikes. Any advice?
Hi, I'm not exactly sure what you did either, but let me first say that this is a big ol' project and I'm intrigued. I assume you are being humble and have more than a clue about bikes.
This post is fairly old. Did you figure it out?
Did you have to install a new rear freehub and cassette for the motor drivetrain? I assume you did, and I would be checking the freehub body. If you didn't seat it properly, then some pawls could have been broken or damaged in the process which could cause all kinds of issues in the back. Your rear axle should be inspected to make sure it's not broken, bent or excessively worn in spots. And, yes, your bearings could also be an issue.
