Good starter bike to buy brand new? AM

Can't find anything used at an appropriate price. Anything decent for $1,500 new? Do any shops sell used bikes? I'm 6'1 220lbs fairly athletic. I'm in the east bay area of CA. Used bikes are generally 2x the blue book.
