Do I need a new airshaft to get 180mm travel or is their a spacer that just needs to be removed?

Bike is yt Capra al pro 29” 2021

I’m about to switch to a smash pot coil conversion and it says I can switch to 180mm but am a bit confused what the coil is replacing my air shaft or air damper?

If you stay air only (no Smashpot, no Push ACS3) you would change the air shaft in the non-damper side to do that.

Part numbers are under 'Air Shaft Assemblies' at https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=1067

If you go for a coil conversion you don't need an air shaft because the coil conversion takes the place of that assembly in the fork.

In either case, air spring travel change or coil conversion, you aren't messing around with the damper side of the fork.

In most cases a conversion to coil is a one-way trip so that is something to keep in mind unless you are sure you want to go coil.

The 38 has the air spring assembly in cartridge form. You can go back and forth between air and coil with no issues.
