Do I need a second wheelset?

With the cost of studded tires is it advisable to ride them when snow cover is marginal? What I mean is will the studs wear on exposed rocks?
Or is it best to wait till there is actually ice on the trails to break them out? Are the studs more durable than I think or should the new tires be babied? I’ve been thinking I should get a spare wheels set and put my studded winter tires on. But wow can that cost plenty of cash. What do most people do with this?

I would take care of the studded tires as rocks, sidewalks and roads will shorten the studs quickly.
If swapping tires is to much of a PITA then I'd get a cheap set of used wheels and put them on in the winter. Unless you ride primarily in the winter then get better wheels.

We changed out our tires. pretty hassle free and you only use them in extreme weather, So
where we are they went on 5-6 times in the winter. they wear out fast if contact point is rock
and not ice and snow.

I would recommend finding another wheelset. I found a used wheelset on c-list, and put my studded tires on them. I got lucky getting them for what I got them for, $250! They are Giants in-house wheelset, 150 front/197 rear, I bought a cassette and brake rotors so I don’t need to swap them. Brakes line up perfectly, no need for adjustments. I can ride the bike whenever I want ice/snow/no snow, doesn’t matter.

Hello, if there is a very small snow cover, it makes no sense to put on spikes, I only put spikes on when it is above 5 cm of snow, then unfortunately I have to, but if it is below 5 cm, I never assume because it does not make sense, but if you already have snow every day because you can already put it on because you will have to do it anyway
