I've had my (medium) RZ1 29er since June and been doing lots replacements and overall pretty happy with the bike! However I was wanting a bit more adjustments on the rear shock and to hopefully perform better. Not much pop even on the highest rebound setting (which the dial is reversed??).. I was also finding the 130mm RS Recon starting to feel a bit harsh and bland.
So, I was able to upgrade the XFusion to a Fox Float DPX2 and the fork with a 2020 Rockshox Yari RC 170mm with a C1 upgrade I both found here on PB. We just got the DPX2 on and will be trying it this weekend, but I'm also looking at changing out the Fork's air spring to go a bit lower travel (140 or 150mm) to help match the medium travel of the bike.
But before I do.. would the 170mm travel throw this geometry way off with the travel being so disparate between the two? 170mm vs 130mm.. Friend did a test fit of the new fork and he said its pretty noticeably more slack cause of the extension..
Leaving the fork at 170mm is going to ruin the geometry. Yes you may get a slacker head tube angle but you will also make the reach shorter and the seat tube angle slacker which is not ideal. The BB height will also be higher which is going to make the bike feel tippy at low speeds. By doing this you will void the warranty on the frames because a longer fork is going to put more stress on the headtube. The main rule of thumb is not to go more than 10mm in travel.

Good to know since i was looking to upgrade my recon rl fork (130mm] on my 21 rift zone 27.5 2 to a 150mm...I may just also remove one spacer from fork based on the sram tech manual and turn into 140mm travel

Appreciate the info, THANKS! Right now going 150 with spring as its what I got on hand.. will see how that feels and then move down to 140 with a RC2 or RCT upgrade when they get available ..
I’m running a bomber z1 with 160mm travel on my 2021 rift zone 3. It’s running great at bike parks. But on trails the climbs took some getting used to.
Initially it was going to be air spring/damper only, but shortly after posting I found a good deal on a Push Ind ACS3 Coil system and installed it too. Installed the 150mm damper and put in Push Ind Fork Seals. After a whole season of riding, I really don't want to go back at all!
150mm Coil on the front really feels great and I can tackle so much more. Measuring the HTA, its about 64 degrees or so. Still feels plenty capable on the climbs but I definitely do like having the DPX2 in FIRM mode for climbing.. What im finding though is that the 125mm in the rear is holding it back as it feels stiff unless I go full slow rebound and its not feeling super playful back there.
The other thing that sucks is the Yari fork came with a Remote for compression lockout.. it came with the remote but I didnt want to install it, so I cant really play with the fork compression. I'm thinking about upping the rear travel by installing a 210x55 shock.. but we'll see.
Not yet on the bike, however I bought a Rock Shox Super Deluxe Ultimate RCT 210x55 with MegNeg.. the problem was I didnt realize it was a Bearing mount, so I had to get a different stanchion with a standard eyelet mount to replace it. Friend did a bunch of measuring and 210x55 will definitely impact the frame. I could install an additional travel spacer to help prevent, but I just went with a 52.5 stanchion instead of filling it with up more. BUT we need to pull the thing apart and rebuild it to do that, so we're just working up the motivation to do it..
Welp, got it on finally with the help of a Bike shop since the bike needed some service. They did the proper measurement but still gave me the option to go 55 or stick it to 52.5. I could go 55 and it should be fine, the only thing was at full bottom out, the tire would hit my seat collar QR (I know I know, I just hadnt gotten around to a non QR collar). I opted for the 52.5 just to keep some of the climbing characteristics, but 55 could be in the future which should bring it to 137mm of travel.
Coming from the DPX2, my initial ride at non-lift bike park.. I felt like I was not tuned in enough to feel the difference in that little bit of travel and change of shock. I was hitting drops, jumps and some ramps and... It felt good, dont get me wrong, but I felt like I could have stayed with the DPX2 for where I was riding. I did some rebound adjustment and it felt a little bit better in some of the soft dirt areas for traction. It's mostly smooth track with some minor roots at that location.
The second ride, same day, was at a much more XC oriented location with multi-use trails. Lots of rocks, roots and natural features like tree trunks to jump off but you could still go pretty quick on the trails. THIS is where it really felt so much better to me. The small bump compliance felt way better and traction just felt like it was through the roof save for a minor spot of moondust. There was just a little bit more give and rebound support and just felt great! Im excited to hit it some more during the week.
