Sram GX derailleur with Shimano 12spd cassette?

First off, my bike is currently running a full 12spd GX drivetrain. I was taking my cassette off and it felt really grindy/gritty. When I popped the cassette off I noticed the threads were stripped. This was the first time the cassette has been off since I purchased the bike new, which makes me think it was overtightened during assembly. It's 2 years old, so no point bringing it back to the shop. Anyways, the cassette could use a replacement, and I need a new freehub body due to the threads being stripped(DT370).

To the point.

I'm thinking of going with an SLX cassette(10-51) and still using my SRAM derailleur(obviously meant for 10-50), but wondering if the two will work together. I've seen videos/writeups of people using the AXS derailleur with and xtr cassette and seems to work well, but unsure about the lower end stuff.

I like the idea of shifting under load. From what I've priced out, I could do the SLX cassette for about $100 cheaper than getting a GX one. And yes, that includes a new front chainring to work with the Shimano chain.

Thanks

I have not done it, but it should work for you based on other setups I have seen.
Don’t have super high expectations for load shifting, it works fine but it’s not some revolutionary difference between SRAM and Shimano like some reviews make it seem.

With Eagle and Shimano 12sp, you can do it. To get the shifting performance, you will need the Shimano chain as well and run a chainring that will work with the Shimano 12sp chain. The Shimano chain is slightly narrower than the SRAM ones and will have a hard time slipping onto the chainring teeth if it's designed for SRAM.

If you have SRAM cranks, that limits your options a bit. You can make it work pretty easily with a OneUp Switch chainring with the OneUp carrier for SRAM cranks.

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I did, bought the SWITCH DM with an oval ring, shimano chain and xt cassette. Just waiting for a freehub body to come in.

Well how did it go?

it will work. you'll lose some shifting performance, especially on load. You can use any reputable "aftermarket" ( oneup, burgtec, blackspire, renthal etc...) chainring at the front, might feel bit sticky at the beginning. I've done quite a few of these hybrids. of course make sure mech is properly aligned

Waiting on the microspline freehub body to come in still.

Personally I’m running an xt cassette and mech with a Sram xx1 chain and x sync 2 chainring.

I had a shimano 12 speed chain but I didn’t rate it - the slightest bit of wet grit or mud and it was a bit rubbish. The chain plates hold the dirt in more than other makes. The XX1 chain is much happier in uk weather conditions and it’s gold

If anyone is looking for chainrings that are for Shimano 12 speed chains but Sram direct mount cranks then Northshore Billet do one. I had one with the Shimano chain and it worked well enough - also worked fine with the xx1 chain. Bit heavier than the Sram x sync ones though.
