What is the differance in the fox 4.0 and 5.0

I found a 4.0 for $100. new and didnt know if I should grab it for my 06 big hit 2 or if I should spend the extra on the 5.0 ?????

The 4.0 only lacks the bottom out control. This may be fine for you if you're not hucking. Where did you find this 4.0? I may have to look at that!

The only difference between the fox DHX 4 and the 5 are number of adjustments, they all have the same internals, but the 3 only has adjustments for rebound, preload and adjustable tuning range. The 4 you get all that plus adjustable propedal(the 3 comes with propedal factory tuned) and the 5 you get added on bottom out resistance adjustment. The 3, 4 and 5 all have bottom out resistance but on the 5 it is adjustable. The numbers that name the shocks are named that way to tell you how many adjustments they have.
By the way, i just found this out by going to fox's website, it took me 5 mins, so dont be lazy next time!
Cheers,
Josh
here is a link to where i found this info

I just wana add if your looking for a new shock be sure to check the Eye to Eye length!

Whats cool about your bighit, its one of the few bikes where if you buy an aftermarket shock for it you can actually increase the travel from stock ~7.5" to 8.2" without changing the geometry. Buy a 8.75x2.75 size one for that.

Is the 8.75 the eye to eye length?

yes 8.75 is the i2i length, the 2.75 is the stroke length meaning the amount the shock moves throughout its travel, eye to eye means actual length of the shock from one hole to the other.

Im going to look like a noob now but what does pro pedal acctualy do? i have been led to believe its something to do with peddling efficiency, anyone care to elaborate?

cheers

Its supposed to reduce the bobbing-like effect when you pedal. You know the back shock likes to bob up and down as you pedal? Propedal tries to stop that from happening. A bike which doesnt bob, like a road-bike or hardtail is more effecient at pedaling then a soft dualie, so propedal kinda wants to achieve the best of both worlds. The problem is they dont mention to you that propedal comes at the cost of lost small bump/low speed sensivity of obstacles on the course. Thats why many riders still prefer no pedal platform on their shocks.

makes sense, so if the propedal is all thew way on it will pedal really well, but if its off it will work better dh Razz

O+

You don't need bottom out control anyways if you have your suspension set up right. Unless your last name happens to be bender.

I think so, but confusingly I think MORE rebound = slower, LESS rebound is quicker. So its not always this clear cut when youre adjusting your suspension. The more rebound you add the more the rebound cartridge counteracts the rebound forces making the rebound stroke slower. Thats my understanding, thats the case on some suspensions at least, Im not sure though if its an industry wide standard or not; if its written this way on all rebound knobs or not. Adjusting your suspension isnt always intuitive, read the manual to make sure.

4.0 lacks independently adjustable bottom out. Changing the air pressure in the air chambre still increases bottom out along with propedal. Bottom out is still adjustable though, just not independently from other traits like on a 5.0. A lot of 5.0 owners out there dont understand this and would have been equally served with a 3.0.
