I will start by saying I am sorry. I am sure this has been asked a thousand times and is common information. ( I just cant find it)

Can I use a 12 speed Sram cassette with Shimano Derailleur and shifter?

I know you are asking why. I would like to up grade my kid's bike to 12 speed, he has a HG hub 135 spacing so I cant really upgrade to a new wheel. (spacing and wallet issues) The Sram NX has a 12 speed cassette that will fit a HG hub. I already have Shimano Parts.

Use the same brand shifter and derailleur, and the same brand cassette chain. Chainring can be whatever as long as it is compatible with the brand chain you use (not all 12spd chainrings are compatible with Shimano 12spd)

I just bought a Sroad 12 speed cassette from Aliexpress that’s just over half the weight of the nx cassette and is HG. I’ve seen decent reviews online so it was worth a try for my situation. Might be for you too, as it was like $123.

I have decided to run a sram chain and cassette, would I be better, or can I run a stam chainring with a shimamo crank set ( direct mount)

You can with a thirdparty chainring such as wolf tooth. It needs to be made for Shimano crankset direct mount profile while being a sram 12spd compatible tooth

Yea it is, only way with Shimano cranks is a third party chainring that’s Shimano direct mount but for a sram chain
