Hi, I am thinking of buying a SRAM Sx or NX equipped MTB. I know myself and eventually I will want to move up to higher end GX or X01 or XX1. I’ve been doing my research but I’m getting confused as to whether or not the upgrade path to the higher end groupset model will be seamless? I hear I have to be careful about what driver I start with etc.? If anybody can give me some information about this or point me to reliable resources, that will be very helpful. I don’t want to buy an SX or NX equipped bike only to find out that the upgrade to GX or X01 is not possible due to a limitation of my original frame. Thanks in advance.

The only compatibility difference is the sx and nx use an hg freehub body whereas the gx and up use an xd freehub body. You can upgrade the derailleurs, shifters, cranks, and chain just fine, but Just not the cassette. If you will be upgrading things it may end up the case of you getting a new wheel and that may be an opportunity to get the xd freehub body.

There's also other cassettes that can go onto an HG freehub so you don't end up needing a new freehub body, depending on what you wheels are you can likely pick up an XD freehub body to swap onto the hub.
IMO best bang for the buck and happy path will be upgrading shifter and derailleur. Unless you're really concerned with weight, I'd just run the cassette and cranks. Aside from the HG freehub body => XD freehub body, it should be a straight forward upgrade if you're going with the whole group set.
