Advice on tire choice for 1996 Stumpjumper with Mag-21 fork

I'm reviving my 1996 Specialized Stumpjumper M2 after years of sitting idle. Need advice on tire choice for my setup with the Mag-21 fork. Can I fit a 2.2-inch tire or wider? Looking for recommendations on tire width and models for front and back that strike a balance between grip and rolling resistance. I ride a lot of trails with roots and loose rocks.

IIm pretty sure a 2.1/2.2 tire will fit the mag21...I have a few pairs of those shocks for future builds and have never given that a thought as I have not had a problem with Judy's or SID's with room to spare
