Brake lever mounting on NEW bikes?

In Australia, every new bike I have bought (x5) from Specialized, Trek dealers etc, have the brake lever for the FRONT brake on the right-side of the handlebar, and for the REAR brake on the left-side. This is the opposite to bikes I have see in Europe and the UK. Why is this? Which is correct? Which is better (in your opinion)?
