When I got my 23 Anthem 29/3 (1x12 - 10-51) I immediately upsized the stock 32T to what Giant says is the max size 34T, but still find myself spending 80% of the time in gears 8-11 and almost never in gears 1-3, and am craving the speed I had on my older 3 by Anthem

Has anyone gone to a 36T on this frame and if so, how?

see if your LBS or a buddy has a worn out/old 36t you can use to test for size

The clearance right now is pretty tight at 34. I guess my question is can a guy buy some lateral space if needed? I will ask my LBS

it would mess up your chainline a bit but you can buy crank and bb spacers if you have a 68/73 crankset on a 68mm bb shell frame. I used a spacer from my shimano zee extra bag to fit a 30t to my commuter bike, although this bike has a square taper BB
