Picked up 2 gently used Kona Process bikes. Got bored and decided to check out the bearings. Glad I did, the dive side lower bearing was the worst. Will require replacement soon, but cleaning and adding fresh grease helped a ton.
Every bearing needed fresh grease, didn't look like anyone gave them any love.
Looking at servicing my G1 Process 153. Any tips, tricks, things to looks out for when pulling the linkages apart for new bearing install?
For the seat stay bearings there are spacers that need to go in correctly, my pics show the correct orientation.
The small grub screws on the seat tube pivots strip easily. Soak with oil prior to removing and replace with longer ones if you can (M4x6 grub screw).
The upper seat tube pivot bolt/linkage is often a pita. I have used a wooden dowel and a rag as a stopper to help hammer it out.
Make sure it doesn't spread the carbon/al link when removing, you can tap the linkage if it's binding to release.
Really it's rather simple, but assume it'll take a couple of hours start to finish with cleaning the first time.
** Also, can take some patience to get the longer pivot axles back in and threaded. Take your time.
I ended up doing the pivots on a 2014 134 to see if I could do it any faster the 2nd time... still took about 2 hours start to finish. Both were noticeable more supple after the service. I will likely have to replace the drive side lowest bearing on above the BB. Those seam to get the most abuse. There is no play or noise, but it was quite rough before and still after. After you clean and regrease the bearings do spin them as much as possible to get the grease distributed. More than a few did not want to spin at all initially. After working them back and forth and cleaning with WD40 (much gentler than carb cleaner or automotive degreaser) they did improve a ton.
