Gear Change ?

I wanted to add a granny gear to my S Works SL 1 but my mechanic says the best he can do is change the whole back cassette from an 11/25 to an 11/28. Is that it? How about changes to the front two gears?

1- Recommend finding another bike shop.

2- That's an older bike. The rear hub has the standard Shimano HG 8/9/10 hub body. Look for cassettes that fit onto that hub body that have the gear range you need. Depending on which you select will determine if you need to add a spacer or not.
CAUTION: Derailleurs are built for a range of gears but different derailleurs have different gear capacity - you may have to swap your derailleur for one that can accommodate the bigger range.

3- And yes, you can also swap out the front rings for smaller ones to make climbing easier that way too.

After you have done the research and found the parts that you want then do the math and see if it would be less expensive to find a used bike that already has the component spec you seek. You could probably find a bike just a few years old that meets your needs and costs the same or less than all the parts and labor.

Good luck.

Not sure if you know, but there are many 3rd party companies that make cassettes, chainrings, derailleurs, etc. that you could use to modify the bike the way you like. You don't have to use only Shimano parts. Also, you can modify the hub to fit different cassettes if the hub body is the wrong style for the cassette you want. Actually, you can even use mountain bike cassettes on a road bike - some folks do that specifically so they get the gear ratios they want.

Anyhow, I seriously doubt Specialized is going to go to any length to assist in modifying your bike to a completely new style. That would be like me taking my stock Honda Civic to the local Honda dealership and telling them I want them to give it a different sort of transmission - they won't help, even though they know it's something people do.

To get your bike changed the way you want you'll most likely have to take it to an independent bike shop or figure it out yourself and go DIY.

Good luck.
